About the Seliștat Fortified Church: Seliștat, located at the sources of the Hârtibaciu River, is jokingly said to be "at the end of the world"—and that's not much of an exaggeration! If you want to drive through Seliștat toward Movile, you'll need to find the road first, and if it rains, you'd be better off walking.
In this idyllic place, the Transylvanian Saxons built a hall church in the early 14th century. The tower was added as part of the fortified church's expansion. After most Saxons emigrated in the 1990s, the parsonage, former school, and cultural hall were renovated and transformed into a youth center. These buildings now host leisure activities for children and young people every year. The church itself was also renovated thanks to a project that included the restoration of several fortified churches with European funds. In 2023, the renovation of the church and the nearby fruit house was completed. Although there are no regular services in Seliștat, the church is used for community celebrations, choir rehearsals, and concerts. A special feature is the altar painting by the artist Fritz Schullerus (1866-1898), who depicted Jesus as a Jew (with a yarmulke and side curls) and portrayed a biblical story unusual for an altar. Visit the small but beautiful church in Seliștat, discover other unique features of the altar, and enjoy the view from the sturdy tower.
If you enjoy hiking, you can take a walk on the ecological education trail, accompanied by display panels about the plants and animals in the area, or opt for the audio hike between Seliștat and Bărcut, during which you can listen to stories about the two villages and the lives of the people in the region at various points (stations) along the way.
